A new and improved place to call home is on the horizon for the local Tuerong sporting community with the RM Hooper Pavilion redevelopment underway.
To support the redevelopment, Council has committed $760,000 from its Capital Works Program and secured a further $250,000 grant through Sport and Recreation Victoria's Community Sports Infrastructure Fund – Minor Facilities Program.
More than 2,100 participants from the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association are just one of the local sporting groups who are pleased to hear their home is getting a much needed refurbish.
"This pavilion upgrade will better support our local community, housing a number of improved facilities", said Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Sam Hearn.
The new fit-for-purpose facility will feature female changerooms and amenities, a new kitchen and kiosk, first-aid room and additional storage.
"This project is crucial to helping remove barriers for female sport participation within our community and a really positive step in the right direction", said Cr Hearn.
Cerberus Ward Councillor Kate Roper is looking forward to the pavilion opening later in the year, also recognising the current facilities are no longer adequate.
"The addition of female changerooms in the new design will contribute towards a goal of an all-inclusive Peninsula", said Cr Roper.
"Such a seemingly small act will have a large impact on those girls and women who utilise the new space. I'm proud to say we are supporting women in sport through providing inclusive and welcoming environments within the Shire", concluded Cr Roper.
This essential pavilion upgrade will provide the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association with additional programming opportunities, ultimately leading to an increase in sports participation at the reserve.
This project is part of the Shire's Sports Capacity Plan and Active Sports Strategy aiming to plan for the future provision of sports and sporting infrastructure throughout the Peninsula.
Detailed design is anticipated to be completed in August with construction to be completed in December 2020.
