Turn Old Linens Into New Beginnings

Tamworth Regional Council is excited to announce a partnership with Give a Sheet® for the Planet to host a community event aimed at recycling unwanted household linens.

This initiative focuses on collecting items to be converted into high-grade recycled materials, helping to reduce waste and promote sustainability. Eligible items for donation include towels, face washers, hand towels, beach towels, bed sheets, doona/quilt covers, pillowcases, cotton blankets, tea towels, cotton napkins and tablecloths.

"This is a great opportunity for our community to clean out their linen cupboards and be able to dispose of unwanted items without them ending up in landfill." said Angela Dodson, Waste Sustainability Officer.

The collected items will be sent to a state-of-the-art textile recovery facility in Australia, where they will be transformed into new recycled materials for use by Australian manufacturers including soil additives in agriculture, new textile products, building and construction materials and even items such as sunglasses! This process ensures that the textiles are not sent to landfill, burned, or exported overseas. Additionally, some suitable items will be donated to veterinary clinics and animal shelters in the region for reuse.

"Our Give a Sheet events are a fun and engaging way to bring the community together and contribute to a local recycling solution," said Tonia Bastyan, Design and Marketing Manager at BlockTexx. "By donating their old, worn-out pillowcases, towels, and linen, they are diverting tonnes of unwanted textiles from landfill. All the donated linen will be processed by BlockTexx and remanufactured into high-grade, Australian-made raw materials. A win for the environment, council, and community!"

This program works directly towards our objective 'WE1. Encourage the separation of unrecovered resources into useful components and establish markets for their beneficial reuse' from our Environmental Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan 2022 – 2026.

The event will be held on Saturday, September 21, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, at the North Companions Football Club Carpark at 41 Marius Street, Tamworth. Community members wishing to donate will be able to drive through and unload their items on the day and are asked to ensure items are clean before donating.
