Psychologists are offering free access to an innovative music project described as 'a soundtracked therapy session' as part of a James Cook University study.
JCU Psychology lecturer Dr Amanda Krause said the Listen Up event is run by the progressive online therapy practice, The Indigo Project.
"I've done in-depth research on the Listen Up event previously and found the experience improved the wellbeing of attendees, left them feeling less stressed and allowed them to process emotions," said Dr Krause.
She said the research is being further expanded upon in this new study.
"The events usually cost $50, but on 15, 16 and 17 March they will be free for participants who agree to take part in a short survey after the event. All you need is a pair of headphones, a computer and a space to lie down, get comfy and listen in," said Dr Krause.
She said participants should not expect to hear whale music and pan pipes.
"All sessions are designed to offer a unique sound experience - think soundtrack/film/ambient music that transports you into different worlds. In a recent study, 70 per cent of attendees report having very visual journeys, likening it to psychedelic experiences. It's an opportunity to relax, to process, and to feel music like never before," said Rachel McClymont, one of the JCU researchers.
The sessions will be held via Zoom and feature high fidelity audio streaming. They will be led by The Indigo Project founder and head psychologist Mary Hoang, and Indigo Music Director Rich Lucano, who will guide participants through an experience combining modern psychology and mindfulness techniques while taking a journey through music.
Dr Krause said there is a long tradition of using music in therapeutic work.
"Research has begun to explore music in healthcare settings and has focused on experimental, laboratory-based research. But little work has been done on everyday practices of listening to music.
"Research is needed to examine people's experiences of music-based community events, to consider how these might impact upon people's perceived mental health/well-being and these events are an important part of this."
The events will take place on Tuesday March 15, Wednesday March 16 and Thursday March 17 – all at 7pm AEDT (Sydney time).
Participation is free with RSVP, but there are limited spots available.
