A friendly white rabbit found inside a toilet block at Cleland Wildlife Park, a yellow budgie found inside a bus and a puppy surrendered by an owner struggling to rehome him have one thing in common - they're among more than 60 animals available to adopt from RSPCA SA's new Animal Care Centre.
And this Thursday - for the first time since opening three months ago - the centre at O'Halloran Hill will stay open after-hours. The Twilight Adoptions event aims to bring animals together with people who may struggle to visit the centre during its usual opening hours.
"We're staying open until 8pm this Thursday, and we hope this gives people who might not yet have seen our fabulous new facility, the chance to drop in, take a look around and hopefully meet their new furry or feathered companion," said RSPCA SA Animal Operations Manager Billy Tubman.
"Our community helped us to build this centre and now that we've settled in, we're keen to show it off."
There are currently 641 animals in RSPCA SA care across the state, and 237 are being accommodated at the new centre. The animals available to adopt from the centre are 20 cats and kittens, 23 dogs and puppies, 12 rabbits and 2 budgies.
RSPCA SA recognises that a loving home is the best option for an animal's wellbeing and is therefore giving people the option to foster many of the available animals if they decide they are not quite ready to adopt them.
"We definitely encourage people to talk with us about fostering as an alternate to adopting an animal," Billy said.
"For a lot of people, the experience of fostering - with all the support that comes with it - gives them the confidence to take the next step of providing a forever home to the animal they've bonded with."
All dogs and cats adopted come with a free bag of Royal Canin food and all animals available to adopt are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, health-checked and have parasite-prevention medication up-to-date.
