Two Arrested After Man's Body Found in Yarra River

Detectives from the Missing Persons Squad have today arrested two males following the discovery of a man's body in the Yarra River in Melbourne's CBD earlier this month.

Two warrants were executed at residential addresses in Collingwood and Melton South.

An 18-year-old Collingwood man and a 16-year-old Melton South boy were both arrested and interviewed by police.

The duo was released pending further enquiries.

A machete was seized from the Collingwood address.

Today's activity follows an incident where emergency services were called to reports the body of a 22-year-old Clyde North man had been located in the Yarra River in Melbourne's CBD about 4pm on Tuesday, 1 October.

Investigators will allege that shortly after 1am on 30 September, the 22-year-old Clyde North man left a licensed venue on Flinders Street in Melbourne's CBD.

He then had a conversation with a group of males where it is believed an altercation occurred.

Investigators do not believe they were known to each other.

The Clyde North man was punched and elbowed to the head, before he ran from the scene. He was chased by two of the men, one of whom brandished a machete.

Just before 2.50am the Clyde North man jumped into the Yarra River in what will be alleged was an effort to evade them, managing to scramble onto a jetty, before once again falling into the water and subsequently drowning.
