Two Charged After Assault on Police in Gunnedah

Two men have faced court after an alleged violent confrontation with police in the state's west.

About 9.30am yesterday (Thursday 7 November 2024), officers attached to Oxley Police District attended Bando Street, Gunnedah to arrest a 21-year-old man with an outstanding warrant.

While at the location, two other men – aged 24 and 25 – allegedly approached and threatened police with a steel chair and iron bar.

Police deployed OC Spray to prevent further violent confrontations; however, this had no effect.

The 24-year-old man allegedly walked around the police vehicle and whilst armed with the bar has rushed towards a police officer.

Due to the threats of serious harm directed to police, officers have drawn their firearms.

Police left the scene soon after with the 21-year-old man in custody, due to a gathering crowd and safety concerns.

He was taken to Gunnedah Police Station and refused bail and appeared before Gunnedah Local Court on Thursday 7 November 2024, where he was granted conditional bail to appear before Gunnedah Local Court on Tuesday 3 December 2024.

During the ongoing confrontation, two female constables allegedly sustained minor injuries.

About 11.30am yesterday (Thursday 7 November), police returned to Bando Street, Gunnedah and arrested the two men without incident.

They were taken to Gunnedah Police Station where the 24-year-old man was charged armed with intent commit indictable offence, hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty, assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm, affray, intimidate police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm and behave in offensive manner in / near public place / school.

The 25-year-old man was charged with armed with intent commit indictable offence, assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm, behave in offensive manner in / near public place / school, hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty and affray.

They were refused bail and appeared before Gunnedah Local Court today (Friday 8 November 2024).
