Two Charged After Lake Illawarra Police Pursuit

Two people have been charged following a police pursuit in the Illawarra region last week.

About 8.30am on Wednesday 31 July 2024, officers attached to Lake Illawarra Traffic and Highway Patrol attempted to stop an allegedly stolen vehicle, on Shellharbour Road, Flinders.

When the vehicle failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated, however, terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.

About 8.55am, police located the vehicle abandoned in an underground carpark on Cowper Street, Warrawong, where it has been seized for forensic examination.

The vehicle was allegedly stolen from a carpark on Centre Road, Mascot, on Thursday 25 July 2024.

Following extensive inquiries, about 3pm on Friday 2 August 2024, officers attached to the Southern Operation Support Group attended a business on Northcliffe Drive, Kembla Grange, and arrested a 30-year-old man and 20-year-old woman.

They were taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where the man was charged with 14 offences, including:

- police pursuit - not stop - drive dangerously (two counts)

- drive motor vehicle during disqualification period

- drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous (two counts)

- take & drive conveyance without consent of owner (two counts)

- goods in personal custody suspected being stolen (two counts)

- not give particulars to other driver

- drive motor vehicle during disqualification period

- two outstanding warrants for domestic violence, traffic and larceny offences

- breach of bail

The man appeared in Wollongong Local Court on Saturday (3 August 2024) where he was refused bail to reappear at the same court today (Monday 5 August 2024).

The woman was charged with be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner and granted strict conditional bail to appear before Wollongong Local Court tomorrow (Tuesday 6 August 2024).
