Two Generations, One Mission

RAAF

In a unique showcase of family bonds and shared commitment to service, a father and son are currently serving together as part of Operation Gateway at the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Base Butterworth.

This operation, which focuses on enhancing regional security and stability in south-east Asia, highlights the enduring partnership between Australia and Malaysia, built on decades of military collaboration.

Flight Lieutenant Jason Bomm has dedicated more than 40 years to the RAAF, specialising in maritime operations at RMAF Butterworth.

His son, Corporal Nicholas Bomm, an aviation technician with 11 Squadron, joined the Air Force in 2017 and is eager to follow in his father's footsteps.

"Watching Nick step off the C-17 and walk across the ADF apron as a serving member of a maritime patrol squadron in Butterworth made me immensely proud," Flight Lieutenant Bomm said.

"My first Operation Gateway was in 1993 and I have deployed on the operation in every decade since, but this one will stand out."

'Watching Nick step off the C-17 and walk across the ADF apron as a serving member of a maritime patrol squadron in Butterworth made me immensely proud.'

The advanced P-8A Poseidon aircraft operated by the RAAF's 11 Squadron, plays a vital role in these operations by providing real-time surveillance capabilities.

"Being part of Operation Gateway has only given me a deeper appreciation for the work my dad does," Corporal Bomm said.

"Being able to work alongside him and see firsthand how our efforts contribute to overall security in the region has been an honour. This is the only operation I wanted to do in my short time at the squadron."

The bond between the two is evident as they work together, sharing insights and experiences that span different generations of service.

Their presence at RMAF Butterworth symbolises the strength of the Malaysia-Australia Joint Defence Program, which has evolved over the past four decades.

As they navigate the challenges of their roles, both father and son recognise the importance of their contributions to regional stability.

"As the Deputy Detachment Commander on Operation Gateway, I try to make sure there's no special treatment for anyone on the deployment," Flight Lieutenant Bomm said.

"Nick and I are both committed to the mission first and foremost."

Together, the Bomms are a testament to the enduring legacy of service within the RAAF, contributing to Operation Gateway and the broader goals of preserving regional security, stability and cooperation in south-east Asia.
