Two men have been charged following a police pursuit south of Sydney earlier this week, NSW Police say.
About 9.30pm on Wednesday (14 September 2016), police from the Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad’s Highway Patrol attempted to stop a Nissan on President Avenue, Gymea, for a random breath test.
The driver briefly stopped the vehicle, and let a female passenger out, before allegedly accelerating away, and a police pursuit was initiated.
A short distance later, the Nissan came to a stop and when the police car stopped behind it, the driver allegedly reversed into the police car before taking off again.
The pursuit ensued for a short distance before being terminated on the Princes Highway, due to safety concerns.
Shortly after, police approached the Nissan in Farnell Avenue, Loftus, which resulted in a minor collision. No one was injured.
Two men – the driver and passenger – were arrested at the location and taken to Sutherland Police Station.
Following a search of the vehicle and driver, officers located and seized a hammer and ‘ice’.
The 23-year-old driver was charged with police pursuit-not stop (Skye’s Law), drive while disqualified, use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, possess housebreaking implements, possess prohibited drug, and eight outstanding warrants.
The 22-year-old passenger was charged with an outstanding warrant.
Both men were refused bail to appear and appeared at Sutherland Local Court yesterday.
The 23-year-old man was formally refused bail to appear at Campbelltown Local Court on Wednesday 9 November 2016.
The 22-year-old man was formally refused bail to appear at Liverpool Local Court on Tuesday 20 September 2016.
The 18-year-old woman, who was arrested at Gymea, was later released pending further inquiries.
Inquiries are continuing.
Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
