With school holidays just around the corner, kids across Wingecarribee Shire can look forward to staying active, out in the fresh air, with two new playspaces to try out.
Council has completed colourful and extensive upgrades to Moss Vale's Church Road Oval playground and Mittagong's Cook Street playground.
Improvements to these popular local parks were designed in close collaboration with the community members who will enjoy them and promise exciting new play opportunities and enjoyment for local families.
"Along with our priority was for the playspaces to be inclusive and accessible for everyone to take part in the play and enjoyment," says Wingecarribee Shire Council's, Ned Tripkovic.
Specialists in this approach to contemporary playspaces Creative Recreation Solutions were engaged to deliver the projects. Wheelchair-accessible ramps and sensory play stations are among the new features integrated into the colourful design, along with safe and modern net swings and slides, see-saws, and nature play.
The purpose of creating inclusive spaces like this in collaboration with our community, and for families to enjoy, is to foster a sense of belonging and ensure that all kids have the opportunity to participate fully.
Clever use of bright colours, natural textures and interactive elements stimulate children's imaginations and promote active play. Thoughtful landscaping includes seating and picnic spots that make the most of our stunning Southern Highlands landscapes, with shaded seating areas where family and friends can gather, relax and enjoy quality time together.
"These playspace upgrades were nominated through community engagement as priority projects and the designs were guided by input from residents, parents, and even some of their children," Ned says. "By working together in the planning, we've delivered playspaces that truly reflect the local community's vision and inspire a sense of ownership and local pride."
Both projects were co-funded by Council, with NSW Government grant funding received under the Everyone Can Play program. A total of just under $430,000 was shared across the two park improvement projects which were undertaken in close collaboration with community members.
