The University of Toronto is ranked first in Canada and among the top 20 universities in the world across all five broad subject areas tracked by the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 .
The annual rankings, compiled by London-based Quacquarelli Symonds, draw on data gleaned from surveys, research citations and international partnerships to evaluate the academic and research excellence of universities across 55 specific subjects, which are then grouped into five broad categories.
Of those broad categories, U of T ranked among the top 20 globally across the board: life sciences and medicine (13th), social sciences and management (14th), arts and humanities (14th), engineering and technology (17th), and natural sciences (20th).
"These latest rankings reaffirm the breadth and depth of excellence across the University of Toronto," said U of T President Meric Gertler. "Coupled with the global reputation of our graduates among employers, this uniquely positions U of T to play a leadership role in addressing the world's most urgent challenges."
For its latest edition, QS assessed nearly 1,700 institutions across 55 subjects using five indicators: surveys of academics; surveys of employers; citations per paper; impact and productivity of published work; and scope of international collaborations.
U of T placed in the global top 10 in seven specific subject areas: nursing (fourth), sports-related subjects (fourth), anatomy and physiology (fifth), education (10th), data science (10th), theology, divinity and religious studies (10th) and philosophy (10th).
Moreover, it is the only university in the world to rank in the top 50 across 46 specific subjects, and one of only eight universities to rank in the top 25 in 32 subjects. The other seven were: University of California, Berkeley, University of Cambridge, Harvard University, University of Oxford, National University of Singapore, Stanford University and the University of California, Los Angeles.
U of T held or improved its position in 30 subjects compared to a year earlier. This includes a leap of 18 spots to 31st in archaeology.
Overall, U of T continues to be the highest-ranked university in Canada and one of the top-ranked public universities in the five most closely watched international rankings: Times Higher Education's World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy's Academic Ranking of World Universities, U.S. News & World Report's Best Global Universities and National Taiwan University World University Rankings.
