Universities Australia congratulates the Hon Andrew Giles MP on his appointment as Minister for Skills and Training.
"Minister Giles' appointment to the skills and training portfolio comes at a crucial time of reform for Australia's tertiary education system," Universities Australia Chief Executive Officer Mr Luke Sheehy said.
"Australia needs a strong pipeline of skilled workers to drive our future prosperity. Universities, along with TAFE and VET providers have a central role to play.
"Educating and training more Australians is a key focus for the Albanese Government and we are all key partners in this task of supporting a productive and modern economy and society.
"Universities look forward to working with Minister Giles to increase participation in tertiary education and deliver the skilled workers Australia needs now and into the future.
Universities Australia thanks outgoing Minister for Skills and Training the Hon Brendan O'Connor MP for his service to the sector and the nation.
"Minister O'Connor has been in politics for a long time and continues to work proactively and passionately to advance the transformative opportunities education and training brings," Mr Sheehy said.
"He has played an important role in driving key reforms to grow and unify our tertiary education system through the Australian Universities Accord process, and we have enjoyed working with Minister O'Connor in forums like Jobs and Skills Australia.
"On behalf of Australia's universities, I would like to thank Minister O'Connor for the vast contributions he has made over the last two decades.
"I'd also like to thank the Hon Linda Burney MP who has been a tireless champion and advocate for Indigenous Australians.
"Congratulations to Senator the Hon Malarndirri McCarthy on her appointment as Minister for Indigenous Australians.
