Proper wound care is critical for hard-to-heal wounds. Underlying conditions like diabetes, circulation problems, and radiation treatment can cause chronic wound problems. If not treated, they can grow into more significant health issues, such as limb amputations or even life-threatening infections. Deb Deperry, who has diabetes, had a severe infection and was afraid her entire foot would have to be amputated. Dr. Mina Boutrous, director of UConn Health's Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine clinic, was able to save her foot thanks to advanced treatment options and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
