Transformed public space
Public spaces will be transformed into attractive locations for visitors and residents. The improved spaces will increase visitor numbers in the following areas:
- Market Place
- Victoria Square
- Millennium Square
- Shrovetide Walk
Derbyshire Dales MP Sarah Dines, who supported the bid to help Ashbourne re-invent itself, said:
I am so pleased to see that Ashbourne Reborn has been given the green light by government. This project will allow our historic and once-thriving market town to commence an exciting new chapter.
Performance art community venue
A former Methodist church will be redeveloped into a new space for the community. The new venue will:
- create learning opportunities in the performing arts
- provide valuable space for meetings
- create a space for community events and flexible working
- provide sustainable travel options and connect to the National Park with a new mobility hub
Public realm improvements
Ashbourne town centre will become safer and better with widened footpaths and a new traffic management system. This will:
- connect people to places of interest and the towns heritage
- draw visitors into the town centre
- attract investment
Anne Wright, Chair of Ashbourne Town Team said:
We believe the public realm, traffic management and pedestrian projects, which are at the heart of the bid, will be transformational for the town. The success of this initiative is absolutely vital to kickstart the local economy and revive a positive experience in the town centre for residents and visitors.
