In the first ever joint mission of its kind, Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds visited Tokyo for the inaugural UK-Japan Economic 2+2 Dialogue on the 7 March.

The Economic 2+2 Dialogue was held with Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and Japanese Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Yoji Muto. At a time when economic and foreign policy issues are more interlinked than ever, the dialogue was an opportunity for strategic exchanges on how the UK and Japan work together on key questions affecting global growth and security.

During the visit, the Foreign Secretary also met one-to-one with Foreign Minister Iwaya and Defence Minister Gen Nakatani, where they discussed the importance of close bilateral cooperation on pressing foreign and security policy issues. The Business and Trade Secretary held the second Strategic Economic Policy and Trade Dialogue with Minister Muto, together signing a Memorandum of Cooperation on Offshore Wind, and also met the Minister responsible for the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), Minister Ryosei Akazawa.

The two Secretaries of State were accompanied by a UK business delegation, and met representatives of Japanese business and industry as well as UK companies active in Japan in order to support further partnerships between UK and Japanese businesses.
