Since 2000, the Bank Windhoek and the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) have held a fundraising initiative: The Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project. Funds raised are donated to the Cancer Association of Namibia and go towards outreach programmes, pro-bono cancer screenings and other educational activities, across all 14 regions of Namibia.
The Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) has reported that Namibia observes an upward trajectory of cancer cases from 3 700 to 4 300 on average new cases annually. This year's theme inspired by the brand campaign is called 'Is it possible to impact a life'.
Namibia is made up of 44 foreign embassies, high commissions and consulates from 41 countries around the world. The main objective of the British High Commissions challenge was to bring these missions together for a cause that is far reaching and makes a difference for so many people living with cancer in Namibia. British High Commissioner to Namibia, H.E. Charles Moore noted that by working together missions across Namibia can make an impactful change as one strong and united community.
All Diplomatic Missions who graciously participated in the challenge were invited to an event at the British High Commission on Wednesday 10th September 2024, to celebrate and officially recognize their support of this notable cause. On this occasion the Tanzanian High Commission raised the most funds, a gesture recognized by Cancer Association Chief Executive Officer by Rolf Hansen and Bank Windhoek Head of Stakeholder Engagement, CSR & Sponsorships Bronwyn Mood.
The event used some of the purchased apples to showcase some creative ways that apples can be used to create unique cuisines. The British High Commission in Windhoek first held this event last year and intends to continue to host this challenge annually. The funds raised through this initiative will be used to provide essential cancer care services to Namibians who need it most.
