UK's UPR 47: Statement on Portugal

Statement by the UK at Portugal's Universal Periodic Review at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Thank you,

We recognise Portugal's support to the work of the United Nations on human rights and the prompt and decisive action it took in welcoming Ukrainians displaced by Russia's aggression.

We commend Portugal for its strong commitment to the UN Healthy Ageing Decade and in particular, for the implementation of its first Healthy and Active Ageing Action Plan for the period 2023 to 2026.

We recommend that Portugal:

  1. Focuses on robustly tackling instances of serious ill-treatment of suspects by Portuguese law enforcement bodies, and of prisoners by prison officials.

  2. Continues to ensure the integration of migrants by issuing residency documents in a timely manner.

  3. Takes concrete steps to ensure that victims of domestic violence are supported by law enforcement, the court system and in their communities.

Thank you.
