GENEVA - The UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery, Tomoya Obokata, will conduct a visit to Brazil from 18 to 29 August 2025.
During the visit, the Special Rapporteur will examine the extent to which Brazil has been able to address contemporary forms of slavery, including its causes and consequences effectively. He will identify encouraging practices and ongoing challenges during this visit and propose actionable recommendations for the Government to implement.
Particular attention will be given to individuals or groups who face a heighted risk of exploitation in contemporary forms of slavery, including migrants, asylum seekers, Indigenous Peoples, persons belonging to a linguistic, religious or ethnic minority and workers in high-risk sectors or rural areas. Obokata will also examine instances of child labour and early/forced marriage.
During the visit, the expert will meet Government officials, civil society, human rights institutions, rights-holders in affected populations, academic experts, trade unions and other workers' organisations, private businesses, representatives of the UN and other actors.
