Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Ambassador Bonnie D. Jenkins will travel to Norfolk and Newport News, Virginia on November 15-16 and Halifax, Canada on November 17-19, 2023.
While in Norfolk, Under Secretary Jenkins will visit the National Defense University's Joint Forces Staff College and provide remarks to military students and faculty on national security challenges in an increasingly contested environment. Under Secretary Jenkins will also visit Naval Air Station Oceana's Dam Neck Annex where she will tour the Aegis Ashore Team Trainer and observe sailors undergoing tactical training.
In Newport News, the Under Secretary will visit Huntington Ingalls Industries and participate in a panel at the Apprenticeship School to discuss the importance of STEM education in boosting the defense industrial base workforce, building diversity in the submarine industrial base workforce, and discuss how building talent in this vital workforce supports allied defense-industrial relationships. Under Secretary Jenkins will also visit fabrication centers and meet with local teams working on priority construction projects.
From November 17-19, the Under Secretary will participate in the 2023 Halifax International Security Forum in Halifax, Canada, to promote the United States's leadership in nonproliferation, disarmament, and regional security. The Under Secretary will attend events and hold meetings with foreign counterparts. On the margins of the Forum, the Under Secretary will meet with young students of African heritage in Nova Scotia at the Imhotep's Legacy Academy to discuss careers in diplomacy and STEM fields.
