The University of Innsbruck Quaternary Research Group recently hosted the international conference "Climate Change The Karst Record IX (KR9)" in Innsbruck and online. Around 200 participants from all over the world attended the conference from 17 to 21 July.
The conference, Climate Change The Karst Record, aims to bring together scientists and students to share the latest progress in the rapidly developing field of cave- and karst-based (palaeo)climate research. Following the successful meetings in Bergen, Norway (1996), Krakow, Poland (2000), Montpellier, France (2003), Băile Herculane, Romania (2006), Chongqing, China (2008), Birmingham, UK (2011), Melbourne, Australia (2014), and Austin/TX, USA (2017), the twice-postponed meeting was finally held in Innsbruck and online between July 17th-21st, 2022.
Vice Rector Ulrike Tanzer welcomed 192 people from 39 different countries to the meeting. The participants contributed 52 oral presentations and 123 poster presentations on diverse topics such as orbital-, millennial-, decadal- and seasonal-scale climate change, cave monitoring, ice caves, method development, geochemical experiments, clastic sediments, and human history. Keynotes were given by Hagit Affek (Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel), David McGee (MIT, USA), Robyn Pickering (University of Cape Town, South Africa), Ashish Sinha (California State University Dominguez Hills, USA), and Heather Stoll (ETH Zurich, Switzerland). Participants also took part in four workshops (SISAL, Petrography and Microstratigraphy, Age-Depth Modelling, Radiocarbon). Fieldtrips took place to Spannagel Cave, Nature Ice Palace, and Eisriesenwelt.
Congratulations to Charlotte Honiat, Marit Holten Løland, Dakalo Portia Maphanda, and Melina Wertnik who each received a prize for Outstanding Student Presentations.
