UNESCO Chief Condemns Indian Journalist Ashutosh Srivastava's Killing

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Ashutosh Srivastava near the city of Jaunpur, in the State of Uttar Pradesh in India on 13 May.

I condemn the killing of Ashutosh Srivastava. Journalists must be protected from all forms of attack, and authorities must undertake thorough risk assessments to prevent violence against them. I urge the authorities to investigate this killing and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Ashutosh Srivastava was a correspondent for the news channel Sudarshan News. Unknown assailants shot him several times while he was travelling on his motorbike. Srivastava had requested police protection from threats of violence he had received a month before his killing.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
