UNESCO Chief Condemns Journalist Bajpai's Killing in India

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Raghvendra Bajpai near the city of Sitapur, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India, on 8 March.

I condemn the killing of Raghvendra Bajpai and call for a full and thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Impunity for such crimes must not be tolerated as it only emboldens those who seek to silence journalists and prevent them from fulfilling their crucial role of informing the public.

Raghvendra Bajpai worked as a correspondent for the daily newspaper Dainik Jagran, where he investigated alleged corruption and malpractice. He was traveling on his motorcycle when he was reportedly rammed and shot multiple times by unidentified gunmen.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
