UNESCO Chief Condemns Journalist Rico Pasaribu's Killing

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Rico Sempurna Pasaribu in Karo Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia on 27 June.

I condemn the killing of Rico Sempurna Pasaribu and call for a thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Impunity for such violent crimes against journalists and their families should never be allowed.

Rico Sempurna Pasaribu was a journalist for Tribrata.tv. He was killed in his home, along with three of his family members after unknown assailants burnt down his house. Rico Sempurna Pasaribu had recently reported on illegal local drug and gambling activities, and allegedly expressed fears for his safety.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
