Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Alejandro Alfredo Martínez Noguez in the State of Guanajuato, in Mexico, on 4 August.

I condemn the killing of Alejandro Alfredo Martínez Noguez and call for a thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Journalists play a vital role in uncovering crime and wrongdoing, and effective protection mechanisms must be put in place to ensure their safety.
