Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Ismael Alonzo González in the village of Santa Fe, in the province of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala on 21 March.
I condemn the killing of Ismael Alonzo González and call for a thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Impunity for such crimes must not be tolerated as it deprives communities of essential information and only emboldens those who seek to silence journalists.

Ismael Alonzo González worked as a community journalist for online media outlet Despertar Occidental and was a member of a local association of journalists. He was reportedly killed by unknown assailants who shot him at his home.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
