UNESCO Chief Condemns Killing of Nepali Photojournalist

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of photojournalist Suresh Rajak in the Tinkune area of Kathmandu, Nepal, on 28 March 2025.

I condemn the killing of Suresh Rajak. I call for a thorough investigation into the circumstances of his death and to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Journalists must be able to exercise their duties with the necessary safety and protection.

Suresh Rajak was a photojournalist and worked as head of the camera and video division at Avenues Television. He was reportedly killed while covering a protest when the building he was reporting from was set on fire.

UNESCO has produced two Issue Briefs on the safety of journalists covering protests, in 2021 and 2020, as part of the World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development Report.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
