UNESCO Chief Mourns Death of Palestinian Journalist Habib

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has deplored the death of journalist Abdulhadi Habib in Palestine on 16 October 2023.

I deplore the death of Abdulhadi Habib. I reiterate my call for the respect of the UN Security Council Resolution 2222/2015 on the protection of journalists, media professionals and associated personnel as civilians in situations of conflict and call for a full independent investigation into the circumstances of his death.

Abdulhadi Habib was a journalist for Al-Manara News Agency and HQ News Agency. He was reportedly killed in an airstrike in the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City on 16 October.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
