UNESCO Condemns Killing of Journalist Ricot Jean in Haiti

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has condemned the killing of journalist Ricot Jean in the town of Saint Marc in Haiti on 25 April.
I condemn the killing of Ricot Jean. Crimes committed against journalists must be investigated and prosecuted. I call on the authorities to do their utmost to stem the violence facing journalists in Haiti and ensure their protection.

According to media reports, Jean, a journalist with Radio-Télé Évolution Inter and host of a cultural programme, was killed after armed men kidnapped him and a friend of his. Both bodies were found the next day.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
