A new treatment that aims to help people with coeliac disease will soon be trialled at University of the Sunshine Coast Clinical Trials clinic in Moreton Bay.
Dr Ivan Lim, Principal Investigator of the trial at the Morayfield clinic, said coeliac disease was a common immune-based condition, triggered by gluten, that affected one in 70 Australians.
"Following our previous clinical trials related to this prevalent disease, we know there are a lot of diagnosed coeliacs who are keen to help researchers find effective treatments."
"While adhering to a gluten-free diet is imperative for individuals diagnosed with the condition, some people continue to experience symptoms associated with coeliac disease," Dr Lim said.
"UniSC Clinical Trials has partnered with a pharmaceutical company to assess the safety of new single-dose investigational treatment for coeliac disease participants who still have gluten challenges.
"Following our previous clinical trials related to this prevalent disease, we know there are a lot of diagnosed coeliacs who are keen to help researchers find effective treatments."
UniSC Clinical Trials Coordinator Charlaine Reeve said the team was seeking individuals aged between 18 and 70 years medically diagnosed with coeliac disease and with a BMI between 18 and 35.
"We encourage eligible participants to apply through our website if they can commit to 13 visits at our Morayfield clinic over six months," Mr Reeve said.
