Police are investigating a unit fire in Beenak Street, Chigwell this morning.
Emergency Services arrived at the address around 9:20 am to find the unit well ablaze.
The fire was quickly contained before it was able to spread to adjoining units.
A 29-year-old Glenorchy man was taken into custody a short distance from the scene of the fire.
He has since been charged with Arson, Aggravated burglary and Do an act which resulted in the death of an animal.
Police will allege that the man killed a pet bird belonging to the occupant prior to setting fire to the unit.
The man has been detained and will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court tomorrow (12/03).
Damage is estimated at roughly $250,000.
