New York, United States (Virtual) - The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) New York office, in partnership with AABGM Inc. - a Microsoft and EC Council certified leading company in the Cybersecurity field, kickstarted the event on Cybersecurity Awareness Training. This is a newly developed training programme which comprises of two sessions: (1) Cybersecurity Fundamentals, and (2) Advanced Cybersecurity.
The event began with Mr. Marco A. Suazo, Head of the UNITAR's New York office. Mr. Suazo highlighted the importance of cybersecurity training and learning. He also emphasized the continuation of such training for the "Awareness and Education" of the UN staff, Diplomats of the Member States to the UN, NGO members, and civil society. Mr. Suazo introduced Mr. Mashkurul Haque, Security Training Programme Consultant of UNITAR, who presented the 1st session - Cybersecurity Fundamentals.
Mr. Haque gave an overview of cybersecurity that it is the practice of protecting systems, networks, and programs from digital attacks. He mentioned that with the growing concern of the cyber threats across the globe, cybersecurity is getting utmost importance nowadays. Mr. Haque then highlighted that the adoption and integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices by the UN, the Member States, other stakeholders working for the UN have led to a progressively interconnected network of cyber-physical systems (CPS). The CPS expands the attack surface and blurs the previously defined functions of cybersecurity and physical security.
Mr. Haque discussed the different terminologies in cybersecurity including a high-level overview of malwares: viruses, worms, botnets, trojans, spyware, adware, bugs, and rootkits, then explained the Social Engineering, different types of social engineering, Zero-day, Wi-Fi communication protocols, and Wi-Fi Pineapple. Later, Mr. Haque presented the protective methodologies for Wi-Fi, computer, mobile, and online platform. In this regard, Mr. Haque highlighted the ways to protect form cybercrimes both individually and at the organizational level.
The participants were very much interested and asked a good number of questions, including on password manager, cookies, personal data vs other data protection, how to detect an attack, etc, to which Mr. Haque and Mr. Abdul Alim from AABGM gave answers. Finally, Mr. Pelayo Alvarez from UNITAR thanks all the participants for joining the event.
