Universities Key to Australia's Research Future

The Albanese Government's National Science Statement and Research Priorities are important frameworks to drive Australia's industrial transformation through new knowledge and ideas.

"We welcome the Albanese Government's vision for science and research to successfully build a Future Made in Australia and deliver national priorities," Universities Australia Chief Executive Officer Mr Luke Sheehy said.

"Science and research - and the talented people driving these efforts - is at the forefront of our industrial transformation.

"From transitioning to a clean energy future to supporting the health of Australians and tackling challenges brought on by changing geopolitical environments, strong science and research are vital.

"Australia's universities are partners of the Government in delivering these priorities.

"Our universities are delivering the essential research and producing the workforce that will drive the nation forward.

"Declining Government investment in research and development will jeopardise our ability to continue producing the skills, knowledge and ideas that will power the economy, spur productivity and define Australia's success in the coming decades.

"The Government's commitment before the last election to boost research and development investment to three per cent of GDP is a step in the right direction, but we must see measures in the near-term to support our research system.

"Universities are ready to play their part and make the Government's vision a reality for Australia and every Australian."
