Today, the University of Melbourne published its inaugural Annual Report on Racism. The report outlines the University's anti-racism priorities, progress since the launch of its Anti-Racism Commitment in 2023, and complaints and reports of racism submitted by students and staff during 2024.
The 2024 annual report is an important first step in transparently documenting our priorities and progress and reported incidents of racism at the University of Melbourne, their status and outcomes. The report captures data for complaints and reports regarding both students and staff, and reflects on a year characterised by significant challenges within the University community.
The report acknowledges that incidents of racism are under-reported through formal channels, as evidenced by data collected through internal surveys and the University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU) Reports on Racism at the University of Melbourne. The report outlines actions to address barriers to formal reporting, and improve awareness, confidence and trust in its processes.
"We are determined that our students and staff should feel they can report and speak up against racism in our community. We take responsibility for building trust within our community that complaints and concerns will be heard and acted upon," said Professor Nicola Phillips, Provost.
"We must improve knowledge and recognition of racist behaviours and their effects. We are proud to be a widely diverse community, and resolute in our support of students and staff of all backgrounds so that everyone is able to thrive at our University."
