The University of Otago Dunedin campus.
The University of Otago is among the top 50 universities in the world in the newly-established QS Sustainability Rankings, and has also been ranked 10th in the world for Sustainable Education.
Overall, the University is ranked 47th out of 700 universities globally and second in New Zealand.
Head of Sustainability Ray O'Brien says the University's high placing is great recognition for the ongoing hard work of so many staff and students across the University community.
"While we still have lots more to work on, it is another clear signal that sustainability is increasingly becoming part of everything we do."
The inaugural rankings assess universities to determine their environmental and social impact both in terms of the education they provide as well as how they operate.
Institutional impact is evaluated across eight categories to effectively capture university performance when it comes to making positive change for people and the planet.
As well as ranked 10th in the world (and second in New Zealand) for Sustainable Education, the University of Otago ranked 19th for Equality (first in NZ), 37th for Environmental Impact (third in NZ) and 130th for Social Impact (second in NZ).
