University of Science and Technology of China and American Chemical Society partner on new journal, Precision Chemistry

The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and the Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) announce an inaugural publishing collaboration with Precision Chemistry, a new journal that will publish research of interest to the global scientific community. The organizations held a virtual ceremony to mark their collaboration on Aug. 2, during which the agreement was signed. The journal is an exciting step that will strengthen the relationship between ACS and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a leading scientific institution that established USTC.

In May 2022, USTC and ACS jointly held a one-day precision-chemistry-themed virtual forum as a warmup for the journal launch. The event, which featured plenary talks from eminent speakers from the U.S., Europe and China, attracted more than 125,000 views.

Precision Chemistry will provide a unique and highly visible publishing venue for fundamental, applied and interdisciplinary research that aims to achieve precision calculation, design, synthesis, manipulation, measurement and manufacturing. USTC and ACS are committed to bringing together researchers from across the chemical sciences and related scientific areas to showcase original research and critical reviews of exceptional quality, significance and interest to the broad chemistry and scientific community. The journal will publish original, peer-reviewed research in the form of articles, reviews, perspectives, letters and diverse editorial materials.

"We are delighted with this new strategic collaboration between USTC and ACS Publications," says Xinhe Bao, Ph.D., president of USTC. "With a rich history in fundamental scientific research, USTC is always committed to nurturing next-generation scientists, as well as serving the needs of the fast-growing global chemistry community. Precision Chemistry aligns seamlessly with our university's aspiration and mission, and we look forward to a long and fruitful partnership between our two leading organizations."

"We are thrilled to collaborate with ACS Publications on creating the new journal, Precision Chemistry," says Shiyong Liu, Ph.D., executive dean of the School of Chemistry and Materials Science at USTC. "Benefiting from USTC's world-renowned research excellence in chemistry and materials research and ACS Publications' industry-leading publishing expertise, we are confident that this journal will become a highly respected journal with international influence."

The journal will be led by Editor-in-Chief Jinlong Yang, Ph.D., of USTC. Yang was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2019. His research focuses on applied quantum chemistry. He has achieved results in design and simulation of new functional materials, as well as results in quantum manipulations and characterizations of single molecules on surfaces.

"I believe the key word here is 'precision,' as it represents the future direction of chemical research," says Yang. "The emphasis is on controllability, predictability and accuracy of processes and outcomes; and at the same time, the goal of the journal is to inspire creativity and innovation. This new partner journal between USTC and ACS will provide a perfect home for these exciting research works, and I look forward to working with my colleagues at ACS to ensure Precision Chemistry becomes the first choice for researchers to publish their high-quality, impactful research."

"We are thrilled about this international collaboration with such a prestigious institution as the University of Science and Technology of China," says James Milne, Ph.D., president, ACS Publications Division. "Precision Chemistry will create a world-class platform for the best research in this domain, and we are confident this journal will be incredibly successful over the years ahead."

Precision Chemistry will begin to accept submissions in late 2022.

The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is a prominent university in China and enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide. It was established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1958. Ever since then, it has continuously served the nation as an innovator in quality education and scientific research by focusing on exploring new frontiers in science and nurturing young talents with global perspectives. In the past decade, USTC has made significant achievements in the fields of single-molecule sciences, nanotechnology, quantum physics, artificial intelligence and biomedical engineering. In the Nature Index 2020, USTC ranked fourth among global academic institutions and first in China. In the U.S. News & World Report 2022 rankings of the best global universities in China, USTC placed fourth.
