During Pride Week, rainbow flags will be flown on the campuses as per tradition. At the end of June, you can also join discussions and meet at the University's Pride café.
June is Pride Month, highlighting the human rights of members of sexual and gender minorities. In Helsinki, the month culminates in Pride Week, which follows the midsummer holiday.
The University of Helsinki will take part in the celebrations by organising, among other events, a discussion on LGBTQI+ rights.
The discussion, held on Tuesday, 20 June from 13.00 to 14.30, delves into the global challenges and successes associated with LGBTQI+ rights. The speakers are Professor Marianna Muravyeva and Kerttu Tarjamo from the Seta association. The event also includes a public discussion and a performance by the Kaupungin naiset choir. The event will be opened by Vice-Rector Tom Böhling.
You can attend the event on site in the Kaisa room (seventh floor) at Kaisa House, or via a stream. Finnish and English will be used in parallel at the event. The event observes the principles of safer space. Optional registration with an electronic form
The event is organised collaboratively by the University's Equality and Diversity Committee, the Student Union of the University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Library.
Literature and a united front in the parade
In addition to the discussion, Helsinki University Library and Una Europa will organise a Pride café for students on Thursday, 29 June, at Guidance Corner, Kaisa House.
The Rainbow Shelf at Helsinki University Library offers a wide selection of writing on LGBTQIA+ issues, from research literature and non-fiction to memoirs and fiction.
On Saturday, 1 July, members of the University community will march in the Pride parade alongside the Student Union.
The University offers equality and diversity training to staff throughout the year.
