University Rises 10 Spots in People & Planet League

The University of Liverpool has climbed 10 places in the People & Planet University League, ranking in 37th place out of 149 institutions in the UK and 8th in the Russell Group.

The People & Planet University League is an award-winning sustainability ranking which assesses UK universities on their environmental and ethical performance. The rankings assess universities against 14 criteria. The University performed particularly well in four areas, achieving 100% for Auditing and Environmental Management Systems, 94% for Education for Sustainable Development, 90% for Staff and Student Engagement and 90% for Environmental Policy. The University also achieved high scores in several other categories, including Workers' Rights, Sustainability Staff, and joint 2nd place in the Russell Group for Ethical Investment.

This is the third significant rise in sustainability league tables over the past 12 months and follows the launch of the University's new Sustainability Strategy. Published in December, the strategy builds on the vision outlined in the Liverpool 2031 Strategic Framework and sets out our plans to drive forward environmental and social equity, creating a measurable positive impact within and beyond our university boundaries.

Nicola Davies, Chief Financial Officer and Chair of the Sustainability Board said: "I am delighted that we have jumped ten places to rank in the UK's top 40 universities and 8th among Russell Group institutions for environmental and social sustainability. This success follows our recent climb of 8 places to 42nd in the global QS Sustainability Rankings. It's a fantastic way to start the new year, and with the launch of our new Sustainability Strategy, we are in a great position to build on these successes in 2025".
