This week, the University of Portsmouth is launching a new research centre dedicated to ending gender and social injustice. The AEGIS Centre (Advancement of Equality, Gender, and Inclusion Studies) will open during Refugee Week 2024. It aims to build a global network of partnerships to tackle these crucial issues and promote inclusivity and diversity.
The AEGIS Centre has ambitious goals, including generating world-leading research on equality, focusing on disciplines with transformative societal impacts, and influencing legal and social norms worldwide.
Through AEGIS, we aim to build a legacy of expertise in research and practice of data-based, socio-legal, and doctrinally consistent solutions to gender inequalities. Combating inequality remains a global concern.

Academics from the University of Portsmouth have been contributing to this cause for years, but now AEGIS provides a greater internal and external focus on this vital work."
Drawing on the University's strengths, AEGIS will enhance research capacity across all career levels and foster collaborations with global partners. The centre will focus on four key research areas: equality law, social and legal inequalities and inclusion, violence against women and girls, and gender and the economy.
AEGIS is underpinned by a diverse faculty and a supportive global community of over 50 members. The centre's objectives include promoting a community of learning focused on inclusivity and diversity, becoming a top choice for advanced research in gender and equality studies, and providing expertise to educate future leaders in equality, diversity, and inclusion.
AEGIS will be the institutional home for our academic community working on all aspects of equality, gender, and inclusion. It will nurture existing collaborations and develop new ones, fostering synergies with academic institutions, policymakers, and civil society both nationally and internationally. Through AEGIS, we aim to increase the scope, reach, and impact of our collective outputs.

The centre will also generate exciting opportunities for students at all levels, providing internships, engaging in live case studies, and promoting a global mindset. Additionally, it supports the University of Portsmouth's ambitions to become a global leader in digital education on equality and non-discrimination.
