Update On Vaping Reforms Bill 2024

TGA

The Therapeutic Goods and Other Legislation Amendment (Vaping Reforms) Bill 2024 (the Bill) is currently before Parliament. If passed, the Bill will introduce a single consistent framework that applies nationally to regulate the importation, domestic manufacture, supply, commercial possession and advertisement of all vapes.

The Bill is part of a wider set of reforms being implemented by the Australian Government to prevent and reduce the use of vapes in Australia unless clinically appropriate for smoking cessation or the management of nicotine dependence.

The Bill was referred to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs for public hearings and report. The Committee recommended that the Bill is passed without amendment. The Bill moved through the House of Representatives on 15 May 2024 and was introduced into the Senate on 16 May 2024. If passed, the changes in the Bill may take effect as early as 1 July 2024 or the day immediately following Royal Assent (whichever is later).

Suppliers and retailers have been given advance warning of the proposed changes since May 2023 and should be actively working towards running down their stocks.

The TGA's vaping hub will be updated as the Bill progresses through Parliament.
