UPDATED: Man Dies After Police Operation At Wollongong

A man has died in hospital after a critical incident was declared after he was seriously injured during a police operation in the Illawarra.

About 7.30am on Wednesday 18 December 2024, police attended a third-floor unit in Bligh Street, Wollongong, as part of an ongoing investigation.

As police arrived, a 50-year-old man fell when he allegedly tried to climb down the building.

NSW Ambulance treated him at the scene for facial, head and spinal injuries before he was taken to Wollongong Hospital. He was airlifted to St George Hospital in a serious condition.

About 12.00pm on Saturday 21 December 2024, police received notification from the hospital that the man had died.

A critical incident team from South Coast Police District was formed which will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police will prepare a report regarding the man's death for the information of the Coroner.

The incident is also subject to an independent review.
