Kerb and channel upgrade works to Churchill Avenue and Webb Street in the Ararat township are underway, with preliminary excavation activity breaking ground earlier this month.
The $1.5m reconstruction project is supported by the Federal Government's Roads to Recovery Program and will improve the safety and accessibility of the municipality's road network, also improving economic and social outcomes.
As part of the initial excavation works on Churchill Avenue, a demolition contractor has removed decommissioned services from under the roadway, to enable the safe lowering of gas and water service lines over the coming month. Footpath reconstruction will now continue, with kerbing and pavement works to commence once service lowering is completed.
Along with the kerb and channel activity, sections of footpath and upgrades to the drainage network are also planned.
Once these renewal works have been completed, both sections of road will be resurfaced.
The project involves renewal works on Churchill Avenue, between Tobin Street and Port Fairy Road, and on Webb Street, between Churchill Avenue and McArthur Street.
"This first step of removing inactive services from below the roadway is essential to preventing future hazards," says Ararat Rural City CEO Dr Tim Harrison. "It means we start with a clean and safe slate, ensuring our new infrastructure is reliable and ready to serve our community for years to come."
