A $585,000 improvement of Wyreema Park (Obst Oval) is now complete delivering a new and improved recreational space for the Wyreema community.
Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Environment and Community Portfolio Leader Councillor Tim McMahon said he was pleased that upgrade works had been finalised and the many additions to the park were now ready for public use.
"It's wonderful to see the park improvements works finally delivered for the Wyreema community," Cr McMahon said.
"A long-term vision for the park really started with the construction of Wyreema Skate Park, which was jointly funded by the former Cambooya and Jondaryan Shire Councils.
"We worked with the community to develop a Masterplan for the parkland and recent improvement works delivered many of the objectives identified as most important to residents, which is a great outcome."
Wyreema Park provides a range of sporting facilities including a cricket oval with a concrete pitch, cricket nets, two tennis courts with a small clubhouse, a basketball half-court and a skate park.
Cr McMahon said spending time at Wyreema Park will now be more enjoyable and safer for local residents and visitors to the Region with new accessible shared paths and connections throughout the park.
"The playground equipment was upgraded to encourage all-abilities play and options for more age groups and new shade structures over the playgrounds have been installed," he said.
"Improvements also included the provision of new picnic tables, bench seats and exercise equipment.
"Parks are where communities come together and are important social and recreation venues for residents.
"They are often the beating heart of small communities, an integral part of our lifestyle and so much more than simply a collection of trees and play equipment. They are vital to our quality of life, health and wellbeing.
"During planning for this project, we identified there was an opportunity to celebrate local culture and community identity as well by replacing the Garnet Lehmann Memorial and the addition of various public gathering spaces.
"Also included in the park is a new feature sandstone block terrace area for community gatherings and sports field spectating."
Local contractor Coops Constructions was awarded the contract for major construction works with Council's Parks and Recreation, Building Services and Water and Waste teams delivering the remaining works.
Major improvement works commenced in March and were completed in June 2021.
