Upgrades Start On North West Tourist Route

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is working hard to make our roads safer and more efficient across the State as part of the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future.

Upgrades to Stanley Highway's Trethewies Lookout will start this week, providing improved safety features and parking facilities for the popular tourism destination.

Minister for Infrastructure, Kerry Vincent, said the upgrades were the first stage of improvements to the highway as part of a $10 million commitment by the Tasmanian Liberal Government under its North West Coast and West Coast Infrastructure Program.

"The Stanley Highway is the gateway to one of Tasmania's most popular tourism destinations, which includes the Stanley township and The Nut," Mr Vincent said.

"The first stage of these works delivers improved tourism infrastructure through safety upgrades to Trethewies Lookout, a popular spot to take photos of one of North West Tasmania's beautiful landscapes.

"The works will include an improved surface, better entry and exit, clear parking bays and new signage."

Mr Vincent said further upgrades to the highway would start later in 2025, including road widening and resealing.

"Designs for the second stage of Stanley Highway upgrades are currently being finalised, with further improvements between the Bass Highway intersection and Dovecote Road expected to start later this year," Mr Vincent said.

"These upgrades, based on feedback from nearby landowners, residents and other key stakeholders throughout the community, will provide further safety improvements to the Stanley Highway while also enhancing the experience for all road users," he said.

"We thank those who have contributed to providing information on the condition and needs of the roads in that region."

Trethewies Lookout upgrades will take place from Tuesday, 28 January 2025 to Friday, 14 March 2025.

Road users and visitors can expect some temporary traffic changes including reduced speed limits and occasional lane closures between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm Monday to Saturday.

Road users are asked to allow 15-minutes extra travel time and to follow the directions of traffic controllers and signs.
