Council is conducting urgent sand bagging works in front of a number of bathing boxes on Dendy Street Beach.
Sand under the boxes has been undermined due to recent severe storms.
Council will close the beach south of Kinane St toilet from Tuesday 4 February to allow heavy vehicles to harvest sand from the beach and install sandbags.
The sandbags are being installed as a temporary solution. The beach will be renourished with additional sand following the busy summer season. We are also continuing to investigate longer term solutions to coastal erosion on the iconic beach.
As the beach is a natural coastal environment, high tides and storm surges impact the bathing boxes from time to time.
The Dendy Street Beach Masterplan 2013 included six new bathing boxes at the southern end of the bathing box precinct above the high tide line.
The boxes were moved from the front of the beach to the back of the beach many years ago in order to provide more protection from tides.
Large 0.75m3 sandbags are being installed at the footing of bathing boxes 77, 80, 82, 83, 84, 85 and 87 to prevent further damage caused by waves and wind. This solution is temporary, and we are continuing to investigate longer term solutions.
Temporary fencing will be erected around boxes 77 and 80 until they are made safe.
