Working alongside the Eastern Transportation Coalition, we've launched DriveTU - a mileage-based user fee study, part of the largest on the east coast of the U.S., that is helping governments gather the insights they need to evaluate more sustainable and equitable tools to fund transportation.
Mileage-based user fees, known as a pay-as-you-go system, could provide an alternative to the gas tax and other conventional ways of funding America's infrastructure. With dwindling public funding reserves and an increase in fuel-efficient and electric vehicles, finding new sources of funding is a top priority for U.S. policymakers.
The pilot will recruit 400 drivers from the Greater Washington Area for a three-month study to
assess how mileage-based user fee systems can work with toll roads, and how these systems can incorporate congestion and cordon pricing. While no money will be exchanged, participants will receive a sample invoice that includes simulated fees for distance driven, as well as for travel in peak times or high-congestion locations.
