Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell will host Japanese Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Okano Masataka and Republic of Korea (ROK) First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Kim Hong-kyun for a trilateral dialogue in historic little Washington Virginia on May 31. This dialogue, a key deliverable from the historic 2023 Camp David Summit, will reaffirm the importance of trilateral cooperation in advancing a free and open, connected, prosperous, secure, and resilient Indo-Pacific region.
This dialogue will focus on utilizing our collective capacity to strengthen cooperation on economic security, critical and emerging technologies, and maritime security, as well as a range of regional and global challenges, including the threats posed by the DPRK to regional and global peace and security, Russia's illegal war against Ukraine, the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and humanitarian support for the people of Gaza.
The Deputy Secretary will also meet with his counterparts in separate bilateral engagements. On May 30, Deputy Campbell and Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Okano will participate in the inaugural meeting of the vice-ministerial U.S.-Japan Strategic Diplomacy and Development Dialogue, along with USAID Deputy Administrator Isobel Coleman. On the morning of May 31, the Deputy Secretary will meet with First Vice Foreign Minister Kim to discuss the crucial role of the U.S.-ROK Alliance in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
