On October 3, Administrator Samantha Power spoke with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia, and issues related to the ongoing pause of USAID-supported food assistance in the country. In response to reports of large-scale diversion of food supplies intended to feed vulnerable populations, the United States is working with the Government of Ethiopia to enact reforms which will ensure that aid reaches intended beneficiaries across the country.
In her meeting with Secretary-General Guterres, Administrator Power emphasized the U.S. government's desire to resume food assistance as soon as possible and reaffirmed the United States' support for the Ethiopian people. She also discussed on-going efforts to strengthen risk management measures in cooperation with the Government of Ethiopia and humanitarian organizations. The two also discussed support for refugees in Ethiopia.
The Administrator also spoke about her recent trip to Armenia and Azerbaijan and reiterated the U.S. commitment to supporting the people still living in Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as those who have been displaced in Armenia following Azerbaijan's recent military action in Nagorno-Karabakh.
