The life of a true Territory icon, Nick Dondas, was honoured at a State Memorial in Darwin this morning.
"As we reflect on his life, we remember not only the public achievements that defined his extraordinary career, but also the character, commitment and dedication that shaped the person he was to all who knew him," said Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro.
Nick's legacy is built on unwavering service to the Northern Territory, first as a member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, and later as a federal member of parliament.
Elected to the Territory parliament in 1974 as the Country Liberal member for Casuarina, Nick served this community with distinction for 20 years, holding key portfolios in youth, sport and recreation, community development, health, industry and transport.
"He was a driving force in Territory politics, and his service as Deputy Chief Minister from 1983 to 1987 and as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 1989 to 1994 marked the pinnacle of his career in local governance," said Mrs Finocchiaro.
"Nick was dedicated to self-government, an historic undertaking that gave Territorians control over their destiny. Nick's leadership during this time made an indelible mark on the history of the Territory."
In recognition of this service to government and politics, and to the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1995.
"Nick was more than just a politician though. He was a passionate advocate for his community, a committed leader, and a tireless worker who always had the future of the Northern Territory at heart," said Mrs Finocchiaro.
"He supported the establishment of a University in the Northern Territory, thus helping to shape the Territory's educational landscape for generations. As Deputy Chief Minister, Nick was also a key figure in the development of the Menzies School of Health Research.
"On behalf of all Territorians, and the Northern Territory Government, I extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to Nick's family.
"We share in your family's grief, but also in the pride of knowing that Nick's life was one that made the Northern Territory a better place."
Mr Dondas passed away in Darwin in September, aged 84.
