The Vanderbilt University Board of Trust approved updates to the Code of Bylaws during its fall meeting, affirming and underscoring its commitment to the university's guiding principles of excellence, academic freedom and free expression, and growth and development.
"As a university, our purpose lies in education, research and discovery," said Bruce Evans, chairman of the Board of Trust. "By embedding this purpose and our core principles into our primary governance document we best ensure that our institution will forever remain a special community and environment where students receive a transformational education and faculty conduct pathbreaking research."
As part of its review of the bylaws, the board raised the importance of also reviewing the university's mission statement, which has been unchanged since 2005. To assist the board in its review of the mission statement, essential for accreditation purposes, university leadership invites faculty and staff to provide input that can help inform any revisions.
