VBA Recognizes AIBS, RICS for Surveyor Registration

The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) is revamping how it registers building surveyors.

The current process of applying for building surveyor registration is onerous and the VBA is exploring alternatives to improve the experience and process for applicants.

As part of this work, the VBA will recognise the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors (AIBS) accreditation and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) membership as a Chartered Building Control Surveyor when assessing applications for registration as a building surveyor.

This recognition will not automatically translate to VBA registration. The AIBS accreditation and relevant RICS membership will be considered in our assessment of whether an applicant holds the required knowledge and experience for registration.

The VBA will check the AIBS accreditation and RICS membership status of current registration applicants.

If an AIBS accreditation or relevant RICS membership is recognised, the applicant will generally not be required to provide further documentation to demonstrate their qualifications or practical experience but still may be required to do so upon request.

This registration revamp will support a streamlined assessment of an applicant's qualifications and experience and is one of the ways we are reducing the barriers to entry for building surveyors, without compromising consumer protections.

These changes follow consultation with industry, including interviews with applicants about their registration experience.

This is intended to:

  • Considerably reduce end-to-end processing time for applying to be a registered building surveyor
  • Improve the applicant experience and satisfaction
  • Contribute to increasing the supply of appropriately qualified building surveyors in Victoria.

These changes have no impact on currently registered building surveyors, and they do not need to take any action.

The VBA is also currently exploring how it can better improve its own processes for assessing knowledge and experience for building surveyor registration. We'll have more to say about this soon.
